It’s the most wonderful time of the year in the college baseball calendar. Conference tournaments have wrapped up, the tickets are punched, and sites have been set. All roads lead to the banks of the Missouri River in Omaha, Nebraska. The field of sixty-four is set, and with the regionals starting Friday, May 30th, it is that time when people wildly speculate on who will be in Omaha in three weeks. And we at B-Card Entertainment are no different, so regional by regional, we will break down all the action for who we think will stand tall and advance to the first weekend of June.
Nashville Regional: getting probably one of the most favorable draws so far. The SEC champion Vanderbilt plays host to in-state opponent ETSU, winners of the SoCon. Horizon League winner Wright State and Louisville. While the Bucs of ETSU have had an excellent year, this Louisville team is looking to prove the doubters wrong, however. In the opinion of us here at B-Card, the Vandy boys will advance once again in a sweep.
Austin Regional: Get the hose, the first of the incredible regionals, as regular-season SEC champs Texas drew a rough hand for the tournament. As American regular season champs UTSA, Southland champs Houston Christian, and old Big 12 foe Kansas State all come to Austin for a good old Texas two-step. While Texas looked impressive in the regular season, they left something to be desired in the SEC tournament. With that being said, we have our first split decision so far, as Tommy has UTSA and Brock has Texas.
Fayetteville Regional: Well, well, well, Arkansas is hosting another regional. Good for the piggies, unfortunately, they drew some scary opponents. Summit League champs NDSU, Big East champs Creighton, and a surprise from before the season in Kansas. Creighton and Kansas are no strangers to big game hunting this year, and NDSU is looking to be this year’s Oral Roberts. The Hogs get a rough draw as we once again have a split decision, Tommy with Arkansas and Brock with Creighton.
Auburn Regional: The Tigers have shown to be more resilient than once thought, and their region will test that. ASUN champ Stetson, Northeast champ Central Conn, and NC State come pounding on the door this year. Auburn has faced a tough schedule this year so far, and will have to weather the storm coming down south. It is a split decision once again, this time, however, the host team doesn’t make it out alive as Tommy has the Hatters of Stetson and Brock has the Wolfpack of NC State.
Chapel Hill Regional: The most stacked regional from top to bottom. UNC plays host to the region of death this year. Oklahoma comes in looking to get back to Omaha, Patriot League champ Holy Cross, and the red-hot Big Ten champ Nebraska Cornhuskers. Any of these teams could realistically move on, but only one can, and surprise, surprise, we have another split decision. Tommy is going with the Tar Heels of UNC, and Brock is going with Nebraska.
Baton Rouge Regional: Shocker Alex Box Stadium is hosting a regional. The more shocking part is that LSU is facing three teams with conference championships. Rhode Island winner of the A-10, Little Rock winner of the OVC, and Dallas Baptist regular-season champs of Conference USA. LSU is the only team in this pod without a conference title this year, making this more interesting. However, a split decision once again here as Tommy is going with his LSU Tigers, while Brock is rooting for the underdog in DBU.
Athens Regional: Georgia, Duke, Oklahoma State, and Binghamton. A few years ago, this would be a region of death; however, now it’s more of a formality for the B-Card crew. Georgia
Corvalles Regional: We have our second region of death. Oregon State beat Oregon 4 times this year. TCU was one out away from being Big 12 champs, Saint Mary’s is the WCC champs, and USC is USC. One of the hardest regions to pick this year. That being said, we have a split decision, Tommy picking the Beavers of Oregon State and Brock picking the HypnoToad in TCU.
Tallahassee Regional: The Seminoles faded to end the year very quickly. Bethune-Cookman stormed through the SWAC to get here. Northeastern destroyed the CCA to advance. Mississippi State is happy to be here. Not the best regional on paper, but one that should be good nonetheless. Tommy has Florida State, Brock has Northeastern.
Oxford Regional: Ole Miss, MVC champ Murray State, C USA champion Western Kentucky, and ACC champion Georgia Tech. What did Ole Miss do to get this draw? While WKU and Murray State don’t have the pedigree that Ole Miss or GT have. Both have put together stellar seasons so far this year and are forces to be reckoned with. Well, Tommy doesn’t think it will matter as he has the Rebels winning. Brock however is going with the team that in his opinion got the shaft and will be playing pissed off. That Ramblin' Wreck from Georgia Tech
Clemson Regional: When you talk about snubs, the biggest one is shown in this regional. Kentucky got into the round of 64 while teams like Troy and Virginia were left out. Could it be SEC bias, maybe, but that will not truly be an issue in this region. Clemson comes into this as the odds-on favorite to advance, however, the Big 12 regular season champions, West Virginia, and Big South Champ USC-Upstate are looking to spoil the party. Tommy is going with the Tigers while Brock is singing Country Roads for the Mountaineers.
Eugene Regional: Another region of death, the third so far, as all four teams won their conference title either in the regular season or in the tournament. Oregon regular season Big Ten champs, Arizona Big 12 tournament champs, Cal Poly Big West tournament champs, and Utah Valley WAC champs. While it is a Pac 10 reunion, Cal Poly and UVU are looking to be gatecrashers to the black tie affair. While home field advantage belongs to the Ducks, our B-Card crew thinks that it won’t matter as they have both picked the Wildcats to bear down on the regional and advance.
Conway Regional: The fourth region of death as the Sunbelt champions play host to Florida, in-state rival and the American champion Eastern Carolina, and the Metro Atlantic champion Fairfield. Now, while to the untrained eye, this may look like the easiest pick that could be made. In reality, this is the perfect example of the non-power 4 conferences' real strength. While a conference like the Metro Atlantic can only put one team into the tournament, Fairfield, in all likelihood, could beat your average Big 12 or Big 10 team. Coastal and Eastern Carolina beat SEC and ACC opponents this year. Tommy, however, thinks that tradition and the bigger school will prevail in the end, as he has the Gators. Brock, however, knows one thing is inevitable. A Carolina team advancing to the Super Regionals. C I N O Coastal is Number One
Knoxville Regional: Somehow, this is one of the weirdest regions this year, if not the weirdest. Tennessee, who is the reigning national champions, but has taken a big step back this year, Wake Forest, who finished behind Virginia in the ACC, Cincinnati who barely had a winning record in the Big 12, and Miami of Ohio who won the MAC, but the best non con win they have is over ETSU who then beat Miami into submission the next two games. By far, the strangest mixture for teams looking to get back on track. Tommy has the Demon Deacons, Brock has the Vols.
Los Angeles Regional: UCLA paid dearly for losing to Nebraska, as the deck is stacked heavily against the Bruins. Mountain West champ Fresno State, Big West regular season champion UC Irvine, and Arizona State, which was the fifth-best team in a loaded Big 12, which sent seven teams to the regionals this year. UCLA and ASU played earlier this year and split the series one apiece. UCLA and UC Irvine have also played this year, splitting the series one apiece as well. So that gets us nowhere, everyone here has also won their conference in some respect. Well, as fate would have it, three of these teams have met in this same regional before. And much like back in 2011, the B-Card crew is picking the same winner. UC Irvine
Hattiesburgh Regional: Well, Columbia is a fish out of water here in this one. Southern Miss, Alabama, and Miami are as consistent as you can get in the southern baseball ranks. Columbia won the Ivy League to get here, Southern Miss pulled the same devil magic they’ve had for the past few years, Alabama stayed afloat in the SEC, and only suffered two non-con losses, Miami really, really, really should be here. No offense to Miami, they’ve had a great season, but losing to UConn, UCF, FAU, FIU, Stetson, and being swept by Wake Forest and Virginia don’t get outweighed by beating Princeton and Niagara. Miami, of all the teams in the round of 64, is the least deserving to be here. A 15-14 conference record does not a team make, moreover, with the losses suffered in one of the easiest non-conference schedules this year. Virginia, Troy, UConn, or Southeast Louisiana should be in this spot. Miami should be sitting in their dorms as their AD figures out how to put a schedule together. Anyway, B-Card picks Southern Miss to advance.
