So, we all have probably seen how for this weekend due to hurricane Ian the Kansas City Chiefs at the Tampa Bay Buccaneers game was most likely to be moved to Minnesota to be played at U.S. Bank Stadium as a contingency site. Well, as of this afternoon it was announced that the game will not be moved to U.S. Bank Stadium and will continue as originally scheduled at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa Bay due to hurricane Ian sparing most of the Tampa Bay area. After seeing all of this godown, I wondered how many other recent games have been moved to other stadiums due to weather reasons. In this article, I will cover exactly that.
First off, we had two games that had to be adjusted in 2021. The Arizona Cardinals at New Orleans Saints preseason matchup that was originally scheduled for August 28th was completely canceled due to Hurricane Ida. (I can understand why they didn’t want to reschedule a preseason game because it would have probably caused issues for the rest of the NFL and the season-opening games). The second game that was adjusted in 2021 was the Green Bay Packers at the New Orleans Saints regular season opener on September 12th. Due to the lasting effects of Hurricane Ida, the game was moved up to Jacksonville to be played in TIAA Bank Field. If you remember, the Saints ended up blowing out the Packers 38-3.
In 2017, we also had two games that had to be adjusted. The Dallas Cowboys at Houston Texans preseason match-up on August 31st was completely canceled due to Hurricane Harvey. The second game that was adjusted was the Tampa Bay Buccaneers at the Miami Dolphins, originally scheduled for September 10th but rescheduled to November 19th due to Hurricane Irma. The visiting Tampa Bay Buccaneers beat the Miami Dolphins 30-20.
Finally, in 2010, two games had to be adjusted, both having to deal with the Minnesota Vikings. First, a severe storm that was going through the area caused the Vikings stadium roof to collapse in on itself, making the Vikings' home game against the New York Giants to be postponed a day and relocated to Detroit to play at Ford Field. The Giants ended up taking great advantage of this. The December 13th game had the Eli Manning leading Giants beat the sidelined with a shoulder injury Brett Favre led the Vikings 21-3. The second game had the Chicago Bears at the Minnesota Vikings on December 20th. Still, it was played at TCF Bank Stadium at the University of Minnesota due to the roof collapsing at the Vikings stadium a week prior. This game didn’t fare well for the Vikings at all. The severely limited Brett Favre ended up getting beat by the Bears Legend, Jay Cutler 40-14. After the Bears at Vikings game, it was announced that the remaining Minnesota Vikings games that season would all be away games. You may ask, what happened to the Vikings Stadium after the roof collapsed? Well as mentioned earlier in the article, the roof and the stadium ended up being completely replaced by U.S. Bank Stadium.
I hope you all enjoyed my article! This was a fun one to do for the first article I made for the website!
