The mysterious green sky that looks like it's out of a horror movie…?

We will take our journey to the great plains of South Dakota where you can find some pretty weird weather that happened last week on Tuesday the South Dakotans are accustomed to the storms that are called Derechos a powerful wind storm that extends over 240 miles and with the wind that can go 90 mph in some areas (pronounced deh-rey-cho). The green sky though is a new touch for this storm and is stated to be an unusual weather phenomenon and has led people to take to social media to share their pictures with the world. Along with them the SD Department of Transportation’s traffic cameras also caught images of this wacky weather.

The green sky that is seen in the pictures, is almost like a mossy green color or like algae in my opinion. According to a meteorologist from the Weather Service’s office in Sioux Fall that unusual colors before/during a storm will occur. This all depends on how the sunlight will interact with the different particles in the atmosphere. Storms can turn purple or even go completely dark during the daytime, but the green can indicate that intense hail is coming before or during thunderstorms. However, colors can be an indicator of severe weather that is not always the case, especially with this weather.

Even though there was no widespread hail with the derecho, there were a few reports of scattered hail throughout SD. There was one in Sioux Fall about one-inch hail stones and also in Lake Wilson which is in Minnesota they had roughly baseball-sized hail stones measured at 2.75 inches (Fun fact Derechos can happen throughout the midwest area.). Then over in Howard, SD the winds had picked up to 99 mph which is like tornado-like wind speed but is more of a weaker/low-end tornado. This just goes to show us all that weather will always be mysterious yet unique in its way and there is still more to learn so that we may be able to understand it.
