EDIT- Mizzou Basketball Is Back!

When I last talked about Mizzou hoops, they started the year 12-1. The best since the 2013-2014 season when the Tigers went the same record but only had one win over a ranked opponent in UCLA. This Tigers' team has gone on to be 23-8, 10-7 in conference play. They earned the 4th seed in the SEC tournament and the coveted double bye for the first time in Mizzou history. The ranked wins didn't stop after Illinois and Kentucky, both of whom in convincing fashion. Wins over a then-ranked Arkansas, a massive non-conference win against Iowa State, and a buzzer-beater against a then number 1 ranked Tennessee team in Knoxville. As the Tigers' record currently sits, this is the first time they have been 23 and 8. The Tigers could be anywhere from 23 and 9 to 26 and 8 without the NCAA tournament being played. So, for history's sake, we will compare what those hallowed Tiger teams of the past did in the NCAA Tournament.

First, by the worst-case scenarios, 23 and 9. No Tiger team has ever gone 23 and 9; however, for four years, Mizzou had 23 wins from 2009, 2010, 2012 (not that team), and 2013. All but the 2013 team made the tournament. The 2013 team has not allowed dancing in March due to NCAA violations. The other three were bounced in the second round. Now for 24 and 9, only two Mizzou teams have won 24 games. The first was the 1986-187 tigers, who lost in the first round. The second team is a legendary Mizzou team, the 2001-2002 Tigers, who went to the Elite Eight before bowing out. 25 and 9 would put the Tigers in a brave new world as only the 1979-1980 Missouri Tigers have gotten 25 wins as they went 25 and 6 losses in the Sweet Sixteen. And the final possible record for the Tigers is 26 and 8. For that to happen, Mizzou must win the SEC tournament. Three Tiger teams have made it to 26 wins, all coached by the legendary Norm Stewart. The first was the 1975-1976 Tigers, who lost in the Elite Eight. The next to do it was the 1982-1983 Tigers, who were sniped in the second round. The last team to make it to the 26-win mark was the 1989-1990 Tigers, who lost in the first round. Only two other Mizzou teams have eclipsed that win total. The 2011-2012 Tigers lost to Norfolk State at 30 wins. And the 2008-2009 Tiger team had 31 wins and lost in the Elite Eight Because. I love Dennis to death, but I don't know if he can top Alabama this year. In my original article about this team, I said, "these are the same old Tigers who will probably end up like many others just like them. An 8 or 9 seed in the tournament and lose in the first round". I can now see this Tigers team with 24 wins this season before the dance. And see this team being in the middle ground between the previous 24-win Tiger teams. Second Round, or Sweet Sixteen, lost.

With that being said, Mizzou is 8 and 0 this year in games decided by 5 points or less and is still undefeated when they score more than 70 points. And Tigers have shown that they can win in a rock fight. They will be a tough out coming mid-March. So, they will be embarrassed in the first round by, oh, let's say, Boise State. But Dennis has brought hope to this fan base. You can hear it at Mizzou Arena, see it in the meme dumps under the opposing team's tweets of the final score, and listen to it on Big Time Talkers every Wednesday, wherever you get your podcasts from. Shameless plug, I know I've been Brock Gorton from B-Card Entertainment. Have a great day, and M I Z!
