The Kansas City Royals have been busier than usual this year when it comes to trades. Which is not a bad thing with the season currently being had. In total 7 trades have been made by the Royals in the 2022 season. So without further or here we go
Number 7 LHP Anthony Misiewicz for cash considerations from the Seattle Mariners. The most lackluster of all the trades this year so far saw the Royals send cash for a 27-year-old pitcher who was meh coming out of the bullpen in the MLB. Misiewicz is currently at AAA Omaha.
Number 6 OF Ben Rooker for C Cam Gallagher with the San Diego Padres. The freshest of all the trades made this year saw a long-time member of the Royals roster be sent to pastures new. As Cam gave a very heartfelt goodbye to a city that he has known for his entire career. Ben Rooker was a curious piece to be sent back in return for Gallagher. As the 27-year-old OF has 241 career PAs in the majors. Going .212/.299/.413 at the plate at that time. A sad departure for the Royals.
Number 5 RHP Luke Weaver for IF Emmanuel Rivera with the Diamondbacks. A trade that saw the Royals' debut of Weaver as of writing this article. The 28-year-old righty has had 7 years of experience in the majors with a 4.76 ERA. However, he has been mainly a starter for the Dbacks. If the Royals were to have him start he could be the replacement for Angel Zerpa til he gets back from the 60-day IL. However, the Royals seem to be keen to use him out of the bullpen. As for Rivera he just felt like the odd man out in KC. He was too old to be part of the wonder boys of Witt jr, MJ, Pratto, Vinnie, and Massey. But not at the same level as Nicky Lopez either. And on a team that has plenty of infield talent, he just couldn’t get over the hump as more than a replacement.
Number 4 Two minor league pitchers for 1B Carlos Santana with the Seattle Mariners. A trade that needed to happen, its placement on the list is more for what it meant for the Royals. This trade paved the way for Vinnie Pasquantino to the majors. Wyatt Mills and William Fleming are the two pitchers sent back to the Royals. Mills has some MLB experience in eight appearances; he has a 4.15 ERA. Fleming is a Low A ball pitcher who is a ways from being ready.
Number 3 INF CJ Alexander, Andrew Hoffman, and OF Drew Waters for the NO 35 overall draft pick to Atlanta Braves. A trade that came out of nowhere and a haul that the Royals can use. The prize at the moment of the trade is Drew Waters. The #8 prospect currently who is tearing it up in Omaha. Andrew Hoffman is the #28 prospect who has had a blah season for the Northwest Arkansas Naturals. CJ Alexander is also in AA Northwest Arkansas he has currently hit .250 with a .726 OPS he has 16 HR this year. For a draft pick, this is a really good trade for the Royals.
Number 2 RHP Max Castillo and 2B/OF Samad Taylor for Whit Merrifield with the Toronto Blue Jays. The most ironic of all the trades to happen this year saw Whit be sent to a country that he couldn’t enter less than a month ago. Whit may have tarnished his legacy in KC with his final month in royal blue with his comments and actions. Following the all-star break, the unthinkable started to happen to him. Whit started to get booed at the K. So it was time for Whit to be traded. And the Blue Jays who are in the hunt for the playoffs once again came knocking and gave the Royals an offer they couldn’t refuse. Max Castillo is the #13 prospect who has a 3.05 ERA in the majors. And a 1.92 ERA in the minors. Samad Taylor is currently the #23 prospect who is batting .258 with a .763 OPS. Both are my age which is insane. So a great trade for the Royals but there was one more that was better.
Number 1 RHPs Beck Way, Chandler Champlain, and LHP TJ Sikeman for Andrew Benintendi with the New York Yankees. While I hate the Yankees, the trade with them for Andrew is the best trade the Royals have had this year. With both Beck Way and TJ Sikeman being in the top 30 prospects for the Royals. Way at #12 and Sikeman at #22. Chandler Champlain is in Quad City playing with possibly my favorite player in the minors right now River Town for the River Bandits. Champlain has a 4.24 ERA which for the 23 isn’t terrible but could be improved upon in the years to come. However, the Royals now have a much-improved farm system with all the call-ups. Hopefully, this means the Royals are on the up and up in the coming years. For more on my thoughts on the trades listen to this week's Big Time Talkers.
