The Colts Should NOT Take a QB 4th Overall

Yes, you indeed did read that right in this humble Colts fan’s opinion the Colts shouldn’t draft a QB 4th overall in the 2023 draft. Why you may ask well it’s coming down to the hype around the supposed top QBs in this year’s draft. Let’s start with the one the Colts should stay away from with a 30-foot pole.

Will Levis now has had a nice career at Kentucky sure he did but in this past season he ranked 11th in the SEC in passing yards, 7th in completion percentage, 7th in Td’s, and had the third most ints. He was equal to or was outperformed by such SEC studs as Brady Cook from Mizzou, KJ Jefferson from Arkansas, Jaxson Dart of Ole Miss, and Will Rogers of Mississippi State. He was being bested by Jefferson and Rogers and equal to Dart and Cook in all categories. That is not exactly high praise for a supposed top QB in the draft. But his pocket presence is fabulous no he has the 2nd worst sack rate out of the QBs in the SEC. Hi Jayden Daniels. So why is Levis being so highly touted? Because he had a great season the year before for Kentucky. However, that was when the SEC was in a down year. This past year, the SEC East beyond Georgia cannibalized itself with each team's level of play. Even Vandy beat Kentucky who was ranked in Lexington. Levis was exposed this past year, and on to the next QB.

Bryce Young Alabama stands out and has also been a rumored pick for the Colts however much like Levis he is best by QBs in the SEC on worse teams. Will Rogers, KJ Jefferson, Spencer Rattler, and even the legendary Brady Cook best or are equal to Young in important passing categories and don’t think well it’s because he threw the ball more times than the others did. No Brady Cook of all people threw the ball three more times than Young and still had a better completion percentage. Jayden Daniels threw eight more passes than Young and had a better CMP%. Let’s face it the real reason Bryce Young is being hyped as the next generation of great is that he played at the machine known as Alabama. And now for the final QB in this group they stay away from.

CJ Stroud congrats CJ you had the most passing yards and passing TDs in the Big Ten. A conference that is known for its running game. Here’s where you come back down to earth. Stroud threw 2 more interceptions than Illinois's own Tommy DeVito. Who only threw 20 fewer passes than you? Oh, and he had a better completion percentage than you as well. Tua younger brother had a better completion percentage than you at Maryland. Once again, another player has been propped up by the machine behind them. Ohio State has some of the best WR in the country on their roster. The same goes with their O-line this year. Stroud has struggled this year in games he has been needed in or should have dominated. *Cough cough Northwestern*

And now for the random newcomer Anthony Richardson. Now while Richardson had more passing yards than Levis it is still less than Brady Cook, KJ Jefferson, Jaxon Dart, and Jayden Daniels. Passing TDs tied with Jayden Daniels and similar to Cook. He also threw the fourth most interceptions in the SEC this past year. Now yes he had very few sacks this year but that is more a testament to his O-Line this year than to him. He also had the second-worst completion percentage in the SEC at just over 53 percent. None of this in mine nor the draft experts here at B-Card Entertainment believe this is the making of a top 4 pick. Let alone the 1st overall pick.

So now I’m sure you’re thinking alright smart guy who should the Colts take with the 4th pick? Jaylin Hyatt. Go WR with the 4th overall pick it’s a position that has been a struggle in recent years for the Colts. Jaylin Hyatt having seen him play in person this past year is an incredible receiver and I don’t know if the Colts would be able to pick a weapon of his caliber later on in the draft. Unless the Colts want to see him local product Charlie Jones from Purdue falls to them in the second round which is highly doubtful as he was the main target for the Boilermakers’ offense. Nathaniel Dell out of Houston is another explosive option, but for me, Hyatt is the cream of the crop. As for where the Colts get a QB the Second round will have some steals like Clay Duggan or Hendon Hooker whose draft spots vary from first to third rounds.
