The Kansas City Mavericks Historic Season of 2025-2026

The 2025-2026 Kansas City Mavericks came into the season with a lot of expectations. Coming off two back-to-back seasons where they won the mountain division in both the regular season and postseason, they would represent the mountain division in the western finals against Toledo, winning the west in 2024, but losing in 2025. It was the first time in franchise history that the team had 40-plus win seasons in back-to-back years. With 2024 setting the franchise record of wins with 54. Few people had much hope in the Mavs threepeating; however, when closing in on the Christmas break, they were sitting at a record of 15-8-1, third in the mountain division.

 However, the Mavericks would go over a month without losing a game. From December 20^th to January 30^th, the Mavs would rattle off 14 straight wins to tie the franchise record of wins. This would rocket them up to not only atop the mountain division, but the league with a 29-8-1-0 record. The Mavericks would then, after losing one game, win another 12 straight for a 41-9-1-0 record. They then would lose in OT at home. Since then, the Mavericks have only lost three more times. At the time this article was being written, the Mavericks had just finally hit double-digit regulation losses. The current sit with a record of 53-10-2-2 and have won the Brabham Cup for the best record in the league for the second time in three years. The fourth time, the Mavericks have had the best record in the league. Three times in the ECHL in 2015-16, 2023-24, and this year, and once in the CHL in 2013-14.

If history shows anything, it’s that winning the Brabham Cup isn't a good thing.  Only five teams have won the Kelley Cup in the same season. Eight more have lost in the Kelley Cup finals, including the 2023-2024 Mavs. With the other 20 failing to make it out of their conference. So history might not be on the Mavericks side; however, for a team that has only existed since 2009, this will be the 11^th playoff appearance for the team, the 6^th since joining the ECHL. If everything holds the way it is currently, the Mavericks will play the Tahoe Knight Monsters in the first round.
